Entangled Dice: Project-based Learning for QISE, Education

Open-ended projects are known to motivate students, especially when the subject of the project relates to student interests. Creatinga pair of entangled eight-sided dice using quantum logic gates has been a useful project in a variety of contexts, from middle school computer science classes to university linear algebra courses. Theproject can be used to teach entry-level concepts of entanglement and quantum logic gates as well as more advanced topics such as Schmidt decomposition. Opportunities for use of evidence-based instructional methods are presented and materials provided, including backward design, active learning, culturally responsive pedagogy, use ofphysical manipulatives, use of real and simulated data, backfill of prerequisite knowledge, and authentic student research projects. Implementations of the project aredescribed from The Ohio State University's Mathematics for QISE course, workshops for undergraduate instructors across the California State University system, Sandia National Lab workshops for high school teachers, and Iowa City Southeast Middle School science electives.
