Human Rights in the Shadow of AI: Confronting Bias and Accountability

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into daily life, shaping decisions in healthcare, employment, law enforcement, and social interactions. Although AI offers considerable benefits, it also carries the potential to perpetuate harmful biases and discrimination, thereby undermining fundamental human rights. This paper explores the ways in which AI systems, whether through design flaws or deliberate misuse, can foster inequities and result in unfair treatment of specific groups. It further addresses the pressing challenges of ensuring accountability when AI contributes to human rights violations. Finally, the paper considers strategies to promote fairness, transparency, and respect for human rights in AI development and deployment, with an emphasis on policy and legal reforms aimed at mitigating these risks.
