395 Systematic embedding of equity and diversity principles in a multicountry EU JACARDI project: experiences from the first yearp

Abstract PTH 1: Determinants of Health Disease and Interventions 1, B307 (FCSH), September 3, 2025, 14:30 - 15:30 Aims Embedding equity and diversity principles from the outset of health policies and practice is likely to reduce the need for more costly, targeted, and corrective measures. The aim of this practice abstract is to describe development of methodology and experiences from the first year of systematic embedding of the equity and diversity perspective in the EU Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes (JACARDI) project that involves 21 countries, 76 partners and 142 pilot projects. Methods Focus group interviews were conducted with the executive leadership group (n = 24) to explore the expectations and perceived barriers and facilitators for embedding equity and diversity perspectives in JACARDI. Based on focus group interviews, review of literature and previous good practices and models, supplemented with expert consultations, a theory of change was developed for systematic embedding of equity and diversity principles in JACARDI project structures. Results According to focus group interviews, equity and diversity were generally considered important. However, the concepts were perceived as too broad and challenging to translate into practice. The need was identified for a shared and simple methodology, practical tools that bridge theory and practice, and capacity building and consultations. To promote a shared understanding and to make equity and diversity more concrete and approachable, the “4Cs” framework (Critical reflection; Context and data; Co-design; and inclusive and accessible Communications) was developed, together with the equity and diversity maturity matrix that operationalises the 4Cs at project implementation level. Capacity building activities and consultations were introduced to support a shared understanding and facilitate engagement of project partners. Conclusions Simple and practical tools, continuous capacity building and motivation, and commitment of the executive leadership group are pivotal for integration of equity and diversity principles. The developed methodology and insights contribute towards more equitable and diversity inclusive practice and policy.
