Strength Properties, Deformation and Fracture Behavior of Layered Metal-Intermetallic Composites Depending on the Layers Thickness and Friction Forces

The effect of metal-intermetallic composite layer thickness on the deformation and fracture patterns under uniaxial dynamic compression was investigated using the multilevel modeling method in a three-dimensional statement. The end friction forces and different variants of composite layers package were taken into account. A quantitative analysis of the layered composites strength and fracture characteristics in the cases of parallel and perpendicular arrangement of layers to the compression axis was carried out. The layers thickness has a little affect to the strength properties of layered composite with a longitudinal arrangement of layers to the deformation axis. The strength properties largely depend on the thickness of the composite layers with a perpendicular arrangement to the deformation axis. The multilayered composite showed an advantage to strength properties and a more uniform strain distribution in the volume. The layered composite with a small number of layers showed greater resistance to intermetallic interlayers fracture. The end friction forces significantly reduce the ultimate strength of the layered composite by 12–16%, and the degree of strain before failure by 0.04–0.05.
