Oxygen Surface Exchange, Ionic and Electronic Conductivities of Ceria and Gadolinium-Doped Ceria at High Temperatures by Semi-Permeation Method

This study examines the electrical properties of ceria and gadolinium-doped ceria as potential materials for solar-to-fuel applications. The electrical properties of ceria and Gd-doped ceria were investigated across a wide range of oxygen partial pressures (from 10 −23 to 1 atm.) and temperatures (400 °C to 1500 °C) to establish the Patterson diagrams. The electronic and ionic conductivities of ceria and Gd-doped ceria were evaluated using the four-probe and semi-permeation methods. This work demonstrates that the semi-permeation method is particularly well-suited for determining the oxygen diffusion and exchange coefficients of oxide materials at high temperature (above 1000 °C).
