Rotational bands in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mmultiscripts> <mml:mi>Md</mml:mi> <mml:mprescripts/> <mml:none/> <mml:mn>249</mml:mn> </mml:mmultiscripts> </mml:math>

Rotational structures in $^{249}\mathrm{Md}$ have been observed for the first time. One set of states forms a pair of strongly coupled bands with relatively strong E2 transitions and no identifiable M1 transitions between the two signature partners. Another set of states suggests a decoupled sequence of E2 transitions. These bands are assigned as based on the $7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}[514]$ and on the favored signature of the $1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}[521]$ Nilsson level, respectively. Based on previous decay studies, these levels are thought to be the ground state and first excited state of $^{249}\mathrm{Md}$, which also agrees with theoretical predictions.
