Japanese University Students’ Silence in English Language Classes: Exploring the Role of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety and the L2 Motivational Self System

This paper investigates the silence of Japanese university students in English classes. Despite substantial investments in English education, Japan continues to rank low in English proficiency, with student reluctance to speak in classroom contexts identified as a key obstacle. This paper examines the relationship between Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA, Horwitz et al., 1986) and Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS), proposing that these frameworks may explain the challenges Japanese students face in English language classrooms. It argues that teaching strategies should focus on improving the students’ interactional strategies and addressing anxiety rather than solely emphasizing speaking ability. This paper offers practical recommendations for creating supportive, culturally sensitive classroom environments. 本論文は、日本の大学生が英語の授業で沈黙してしまう現象について考察するものである。英語教育に多大な投資がなされているにもかかわらず、日本は依然として英語能力ランキングで低い位置にあり、授業中に学生が発話を避ける傾向が主要な障害として指摘されている。本論文では、Horwitzら（1986）の「外国語教室不安（Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety）」とDörnyei（2005）の「L2動機づけ自己システム（L2 Motivational Self System）」との関係を検討し、これらの理論的枠組みが日本の学生が英語教室で直面する困難を説明しうることを提案する。さらに、英語教育においては単にスピーキング能力の向上に重点を置くのではなく、学生の相互作用能力の向上と不安の軽減に焦点を当てた教授法が必要であると論じる。本論文は、支援的で文化的に配慮のある教室環境を構築するための実践的提言を示している。
