The Use of Chromatography in Forensic Science

Forensic science can be defined as a blending of science and the law. The study of forensics utilizes the principles and methods of the traditional sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, and physics, but differs by the fact that conclusions are at times based on the subjective interpretation of results. This difference between the traditional sciences and forensic science is predicated in part by the judicial system. The responsibilities of the forensic scientist are unique in two respects. As a scientist, he or she must present technical results to a number of non-technically trained people such as police officers, attorneys, judges, and juries. Therefore, it is necessary for the forensic scientist as an expert witness to subjectively interpret results and communicate these conclusions as they relate to a particular case. Also, in addition to the peer review process, the results obtained by the forensic scientist must also withstand the scrutiny of challenge in court.
