Applying the Multidimensional Model of Broaching Behavior to Group Counseling in Schools

Abstract This chapter introduces the broaching framework as a tool for school-based group counseling and its impact on supporting proper development in youth. Group counseling is generally more effective than individual counseling in the school setting and implementing the broaching framework can strengthen efficacy. While it may not address every student need, providing adequate intentional support and culturally competent antiracist counselors can help provide protective factors and promote personal growth and healing in the face of adverse childhood experiences, adultification, acculturative stress, the opioid epidemic, and other stressors youth may be faced with—especially those who are minoritized and/or marginalized. Vignettes demonstrate real-world application of therapeutic factors and their impact on students. By having culturally responsive groups, schools can strengthen equity and promote resilience in all students.
