Background
Every year there are nearly 10 million new cases of dementia worldwide. Early signs and symptoms include problems following conversation or trouble finding words (World Health Organization. Dementia: key facts. [internet]). Communication partner training (CPT) is an evidence-based speech and language intervention that is linked to improved outcomes for people with communication difficulties and their loved ones (Simmons-Mackie, Raymer, Cherney. Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2016; 97(12):2202-2221.e8). This is widely used for people with aphasia, however, research is lacking in its use for people living with dementia and within complex health care settings. Dorothy House Hospice has developed a CPT workshop based on the ‘Better Conversations with Dementia’ run by St Christopher’s Hospice. Dorothy House Hospice aims to support people with dementia of any type at the mild-moderate stage, and their partners with managing communication changes and overcoming barriers in communication. Focusing this intervention at the early stages enables participants to proactively consider communication strategies that can be used as the dementia progresses, including advance care planning. Aims of the workshops: Improving wellbeing (through reduced stress). Application of communication strategies (including non-verbal and verbal). Improving relationships (through improved communication and reduced stress).
Methods
People (n=5) with mild-moderate dementia and their main communication partner (n=5) will be recruited via ReMind UK to participate in a five week in-person CPT course delivered by the Admiral Nurse and Speech & Language Therapist. Course themes include: music, touch, advance care planning, relaxation techniques and non-verbal communication. Outcomes are measured using participant specific goals reviewed at the end of the course; Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale for people living with Dementia (IPOS-Dem) and rating scales completed at three time points, introductory meeting, CPT final session and three months following.
Results
The course runs 11 June – 9 July 2025. Results will be presented at the Hospice UK conference.
Conclusions
Anticipated improved partner skill in facilitating the communication of people with dementia.
