Trial Trench, Evaluation at Land west of Snowdrop Garth, Holme on Spalding Moor, East Riding of Yorkshire

Eight Trial Trenches were excavated to establish the nature, location, extent and state of any archaeological deposits on site. Trenches 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 were aligned north-west by south-east, Trench 7 was aligned north to south and Trenches 3 and 6 were aligned west to east. All trench positions were surveyed in using a Trimble GPS. Eight Evaluation Trenches were excavated, evenly distributed across the site and specifically positioned to target Geophysical anomalies or trends and to assess seemingly negative areas of the site. Six trenches (1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8) measured 30m by 2m, the remaining two trenches (2 and 6) measured 12m by 2m. The work was undertaken between the 4th-7th March 2019 during mixed weather, with two days being dry and sunny and two days being rainy. Overburden, topsoil and subsoil were removed by a 360� tracked mechanical excavator, fitted with a toothless bucket, operating under close archaeological supervision. Machining ceased at the top of either archaeological or naturally-formed deposits, depending upon which was located soonest. The exposed surfaces were cleaned by shovel, hoe or trowel as appropriate and all subsequent excavation carried out by hand. The Trial Trenching provided evidence of a system of Medieval and Post-Medieval linears across the site, as well as an assemblage of animal bone, metal, CBM, 16th 19th century pottery and residual Iron Age and Romano-British pottery.
