Yapham Road, Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire. Archaeological Excavation

The site was stripped of topsoil, and subsoil where present, under archaeological observation in accordance with the Written Scheme of Investigation. Given the presence of significant archaeology extending beyond the original excavation area specified by the WSI, the area was extended with consultation with the Development Management Archaeologist, to the north and south, and two further areas added to the north west. The areas were stripped of topsoil by 360o tracked mechanical excavators, fitted with wide toothless buckets, operating under close archaeological supervision. Soil was moved to the bunding area at the northern end of the site using dumper trucks. Machining ceased at the top of archaeological or geological deposits, whichever occurred soonest. Topsoil was approximately 0.25m in depth, and any subsoil present did not exceed an additional 0.10m. Following the removal of topsoil and subsoil, the exposed surface was cleaned by shovel, hoe or trowel as appropriate, archaeological features identified and all subsequent excavation carried out by hand.
