Can Smart Matter Be Modeled by Design? Turning Passive Solids to Active Systems

Traditional materials design approaches assume that solids are fundamentally passive unless externally driven. This work demonstrates that certain transition-metal oxides sustain long-lived, internally circulating excited-state ensembles that operate as a real thermodynamic subsystem. These ensembles influence conductivity, magnetism, catalytic activity, and, in coherent regimes, exhibit superconductive-like transport at practical temperatures. By making excited-state populations measurable and tunable, this framework provides a new foundation for materials design based on internal energy circulation rather than external forcing.
