Trial Trench, Evaluation at Land off Welton Low Road, Brough, East Riding of Yorkshire

Eight trial trenches were excavated, each 30x2m in size. The trenches were located in areas highlighted in the results of the Geophysical Survey to contain likely archaeological features but also to assess areas supposedly devoid of archaeology. The trenches were surveyed in and levelled using a Trimble GPS Rover. Topsoil and any subsoil was removed by a tracked excavator fitted with a toothless bucket, operating under close archaeological supervision. Machining ceased at the top of either archaeological or naturally formed deposits, depending upon which was located first. The exposed surfaces were cleaned appropriately, and all subsequent excavation was carried out. by hand.
