Land north-west of The Spinney, Scarborough Road, Driffield, East Yorkshire. Archaeological Strip, Map and Record

In 2017, twelve Trenches were excavated, each measuring 50m x 2m, covering a total of c. 1200m� and evenly spread across the full extent of the Proposed Development Area. Overburden, topsoil and subsoil were removed by a 360o tracked mechanical excavator, fitted with a toothless bucket, operating under close archaeological supervision. Machining ceased at the top of either archaeological or naturally-formed deposits, depending upon which was located soonest. The exposed surfaces were cleaned by shovel, hoe or trowel as appropriate. In 2017, a Strip Map and Record of five areas was undertaken. Machining ceased at the top of either archaeological or naturally formed deposits, depending upon which was located soonest. The exposed surfaces were cleaned by shovel, hoe or trowel. Segments were excavated across linear features in order to determine their function, form and relationships. The main feature on site consisted of a substantial trackway / droveway, which extended through the full length of along the higher part of the site. The addition of smaller ditches and gullies along its course indicated continual adaptation and maintenance well into the 3rd century, and a series of inhumation burials confirms the importance and significance of it within the landscape. The finds assemblage consisted of a large quantity of predominantly Late Iron Age/Romano-British pottery, animal bone fragments, three iron ring fragments, an iron blade fragment, two post-medieval iron nails, a copper alloy strip fragment (possibly from a belt plate), a copper alloy pin, a lead loom weight, a saddle quern and a silver Elizabethan coin.
