Land north of Sledmere Road, Fridaythorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire. Archaeological Strip, Map and Record

The initial work on-site involved the preliminary stripping of the area to the ploughsoil and crop with a tracked excavator with a broad, toothless ditching bucket, operating under close archaeological supervision. The stripped area wa 150m by 50m located on the east side of a field, north of Sledmere Road. The area was hand cleaned and features hand excavated. Four parallel ditches were recorded. The Pottery recovered from Ditches 1 and 3 suggest the features were backfilled in the Roman Period and were possibly Prehistoric in origin. These ditches were major landscape features on the southern side of a steep dry valley and were probably boundary markers. The pit at the eastern end of Ditch 3 suggest that there was earlier habitation in the area.
