The Implications of the Spatial Distribution of Informal Motorcycle Parking Stations in Ubungo Municipality: A Comparative Analysis of Planned and Unplanned Neighborhoods

Context and background: The emergence of motorcycle public transportation in Dar es Salaam city has raised concerns about motorcycle parking spaces, which are safer and more convenient. Motorcyclists tend to establish informal parking spaces based on unknown criteria. Goal and Objectives: The main objective of this study was to examine the implications of the spatial distribution of informal motorcycle parking spaces. Methodology: The location of each informal motorcycle parking space was determined using GPS through field visits. The coordinates of each parking space and activities around the informal parking spaces were collected with GPS tools to allow spatial presentation of informal motorcycle parking spaces in both Saranga and Sinza wards. A GPS survey in Sinza and Saranga wards collected spatial coordinates of informal motorcycle parking spaces, and maps indicating the spatial distribution of informal motorcycle parking spaces were developed. Results: The results indicated that the total number of informal motorcycle parking spaces is 60 in the Sinza ward and 36 in the Saranga ward, which have been unevenly distributed in major hotspot areas. The pattern of parking distribution in planned and unplanned neighborhoods differs.
