Re-curating Metadata to Advance FAIR Practices Across the NSF GAGE and SAGE Facilities Operated by the EarthScope Consortium

The merger of legacy NSF facilities (UNAVCO and IRIS) into the integrated NSF GAGE and SAGE facilities, operated by EarthScope Consortium, provides an opportunity to align geoscience metadata with FAIR principles and better measure data archive impact. We have updated over 100,000 DataCite records with persistent, resolvable identifiers (PIDs) for publishers, contributors, organizations, and rights holders, addressing missing elements and semantic drift using the latest DataCite schema, RORs, and ORCIDs. This systematic update clarifies relationships between the EarthScope Consortium, its predecessors, and partners. We are also enriching metadata with standardized roles and improving author discoverability via ORCID integration. This work strengthens the provenance, traceability, and interoperability of GAGE and SAGE (now combined into the National Geophysical Facility) datasets, enhances their connection to the scholarly record through services like DataCite, Crossref, and OpenAlex, improves our ability to measure facility impact for funders and informs platform re-architecture and system integration.
