Possibility of Redevelopment of Slums in Santacruz, Mumbai: A Case Study Approach

Slum redevelopment in Mumbai has emerged as one of the most complex yet necessary challenges in urban planning and housing policy.Santacruz, a prominent suburban area of Mumbai, contains several large slum pockets such as Jaku Club, Om Namo Sujalam Sufalam Society, and Jagruti in Vakola.Despite multiple government interventions under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the pace of redevelopment in Mumbai remains slow, with only about 8% of slums redeveloped in the past decade.This paper critically examines the possibility of redevelopment in Santacruz by analyzing existing projects, their timelines, challenges, and outcomes.Using secondary data from government reports, legal documents, and case studies supported by statistical and graphical analysis-the study identifies barriers such as financial constraints, legal disputes, and resident resistance.Findings indicate that while redevelopment offers significant social and economic benefits, its feasibility depends on resolving ownership disputes, ensuring financial support for developers, and safeguarding residents' rights.The paper concludes with recommendations for greater transparency, financial reform, and community participation in the redevelopment process.
