Fishing vessel ocean observing network: an emerging collaborative global network

There is a growing need for enhanced surface and subsurface coastal observations to enable integrated modelling and deci- sion-supporting tools. Fishing vessel ocean data collection integra- tions complement existing ocean observing networks by enabling the cost-effect collection of surface and subsurface ocean data to dramatically increase coverage in data-sparse regions. Fishing vessels can serve as platforms to host and deploy an assortment of oceanographic instrumentation; furthermore, many fishing gears already profile through the water column, presenting a unique subsurface data collection opportunity. Counterintuitively, the shelf and coastal regions in which most fishing activities take place are among the most data scarce, especially for subsurface oceanographic data that fishing vessels are so well suited to col- lect. These data can benefit fisheries science by providing environ- mental data coupled with catches, improving coastal and ocean models, and promoting the participation of fishery stakeholders in the scientific process. This data collection approach is a win-win because the fishing industry can use these data to adopt inno- vative solutions to improve fisheries sustainability, profitability, and community resilience. To maximize these benefits and com- plement existing ocean observing networks, the Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network (FVON) has been formed to foster the proliferation of collaborative cost-effective ocean data collection, democratize ocean observations, establish community standards and best practices, and facilitate observation uptake to improve ocean predictions while promoting sustainable fishing.
