On Developing Enhancement Artefacts for Musical Instruments via 3D-Printing: A Case Study on the Euphonium

Abstract In this article, we describe our perspective on designing novel 3D-printed artifacts for enhancing the capabilities of classical musical instruments. Grounding our reflections on organology, traditional practice, and repertoire, we present a case-study on designing devices for euphoniums. Artifacts are developed throughout a collaborative process with a professional euphoniumist, whose suggestions and expertise allows the refinement of the prototypes and their direct evaluation in performative scenarios.
