Superhero Movies and Hollywood Decline: The Influence of Economic Environments

This paper explores the historical evolution and current decline of superhero movies in Hollywood, emphasizing the role of economic environments. From their origins during the Great Depression to their peak in the post-2008 financial crisis era, superhero films have reflected societal needs for escapism and heroism. However, recent challenges, including rising pro- duction costs, cultural fatigue, and disruptions from streaming and strikes, signal a downturn. Through quantitative analysis and comparative studies, this paper argues that economic factors—such as recessions fostering demand for “safe” entertainment and prosperity leading to genre fatigue— significantly influence the genre’s trajectory. Data from box office trends and regression analysis support this thesis, with implications for Hollywood’s future adaptability.
