The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly transforming modern society, driving efficiencies and advancements across various sectors, from healthcare to smart homes and industrial automation. However, the vast adoption of IoT devices has created significant cyber security challenges. These devices, often lacking robust security measures, expose users and critical infrastructures to cyber-attacks. High-profile incidents like the 2016 Mirai botnet attack and the 2021 water treatment facility hack highlight the severe risks associated with unsecured IoT devices. This project proposes the development of an advanced firewall system for IoT devices, addressing these vulnerabilities and mitigating potential threats. The firewall solution integrates the ESP-NOW communication protocol, which ensures secure, peer-to-peer communication between devices, reducing reliance on centralized systems and minimizing attack surfaces. By incorporating encryption, access control, and secure data transmission, the firewall offers a proactive approach to protecting IoT ecosystems from unauthorized access and exploitation. This solution is designed to be scalable and adaptable, ensuring its applicability across diverse IoT use cases, from personal devices to critical infrastructure systems.
