Application of Current Limiting Reactors in Transmission System

Short circuit events in transmission grids pose significant threats to the stability and reliability of power systems. One of the most effective methods for controlling short circuit currents and minimizing their impact is the use of series reactors. This paper explores the different fault level mitigation methods with a clear comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each. Further, the paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the concept, design and implementation of series reactors in transmission grids as a means of controlling short circuit currents by discussing their important aspects in terms of design & construction, installation, maintenance, operational principles and effectiveness.
