The RF performance of Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) vehicular communication system requirements are well defined in SAE J3161/1 for passenger vehicles and light trucks, specifically class 2,34 and 5 vehicles only. J3161/1 includes antenna requirements that were established after a significant testing and simulation campaign performed by the Automotive OEMs and automotive suppliers. Due to time and resource limitations antenna performance of the other classes of vehicles was deferred to later standards. Most of the research that was done for class 2-5 applies to higher class vehicles, like larger trucks. But this leaves out Class 1 vehicles. Class 1 vehicles, motorcycles, are a class of vehicles that have unique characteristics that are not common for the rest of the classes of vehicles. The list of differences in Class 1 vs other classes includes the following: (1) Motorcycle antenna placement locations tend to be much lower to the ground than the other classes of vehicles. This significantly degrades the performance of the V2X link. (2) Depending on packaging location the motorcycle rider influences the antenna's performance much more than exterior automotive C-V2X antennas. (3) The smaller size of a motorcycle allows for the possibility of full azimuth <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{3 6 0}$</tex>-degree azimuth coverage around the entire vehicle with a single antenna. In addition, the motorcycle will not have degradation due to panoramic roofs, roof rails, or glass windscreens that cause known degradation in C-V2X antenna performance. (4) Motorcycles do not provide large ground plane mounting surfaces on class 2 and higher vehicles. This paper presents the result of a Class 1 Vehicle testing campaign performed at the Oakland University Applied EMAG and Wireless Lab Outdoor Automotive Antenna range. A typical vertically polarized was designed and used for this study to evaluate the packaging locations on the front, side, and rear of the motorcycle.
