Libraries in primary schools in the city of Užice: A comparative overview of 2004 and 2024

The paper explores the state of primary school libraries in Užice by comparing data from 2004 and 2024, focusing on changes in the role of libraries in the educational process, space, book collections, catalogs, computer equipment, and professional staff. Analysis of the collected data has determined that school libraries have undergone significant transformations over the past twenty years. While in 2004 the dominant part of the library collection consisted of printed materials with limited technological support, the 2024 situation is characterized by the integration of digital resources, improved infrastructural equipment, a more demanding role for librarians, and greater interaction with teachers and students. Nevertheless, challenges in the form of lack of funding and space, staff training still persist, which indicates the need for continuous investment and development of school libraries as key places for supporting education and developing students' digital competencies.
