Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) Testing: A Game Changer in Automotive EV Powertrain Validation

This paper presents the review on Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) validation for electric vehicles (EVs). In a modern EV powertrain system, validation of the inverter is more important. PHIL testing bridges the gap between real-world test conditions on MCU (inverter) and simulation-based validation. Conventional Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing focuses on validation of control strategies, whereas PHIL enables direct involvement of actual power hardware and contributes to high-fidelity testing of inverters and battery systems under various load conditions. Further, this paper brings out the importance of PHIL in automotive testing and supports real-time test conditions, verifies power stages, and analyzes fault conditions in a controlled environment.
