Archaeometallurgical Provenances and Contexts

Abstract This article examines archaeometallurgical provenance determination methods for understanding the technological developments and cultural relationships of ancient metal-using societies. Two case studies demonstrate applications: lead isotope data revealing shifts in European Bronze Age copper sources from Slovakian to Eastern Alps ores, and minor element analyses of Iranian Bronze Age copper alloy vessels indicating multiple regional provenances and possible long-distance connections with the Indus Valley civilization. Successful provenance studies require cross-disciplinary collaboration, integrating chemical analyses with archaeological, geological, and anthropological evidence to comprehensively reconstruct ancient metallurgical practices and trade networks.
