Nanomaterials in Diabetic Wound Dressing: AMini Review

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent worldwide chronic diseases. This disease is result of impaired insulin production or function which leads to the sustainable high blood glucose. Diabetes causes numerous problems including neuropathy, vascular disorders and chronic infections. One of the most known infections are diabetic wounds, particularly foot ulcers. Diabetes delays the healing process leading to a non-healing wound and finally this disease can lead to amputation. Nanotechnology has introduced innovative approaches to treating these wounds. In fact, presence of nanomaterials in diabetic wound dressing can decrease healing time even up to 50%. Different kinds of nanomaterials including inorganic, organic, biological and composite nanostructures, were used in diabetic wound dressings. This review article explores the impact of nanomaterials on diabetic wound treatment in recent decade. In this way, different kinds of implemented nanomaterials in diabetic wound dressings and their mechanism of action, advantages, limitations and challenges are compared. Overall, nanomaterials operate through controlled drug release, stimulation of cell growth, and inflammation reduction.
