Tailing injection deposition method theoretical model

The discharge of tailing slurry using either sub-aerial or sub-aqueous deposition methods often results in particle-size segregation within the tailing mass. As predicted by Stokes Law, segregation occurs because coarse particles settle quicker than fine particles. Injection of tailing slurry offers a simple method to minimize particle segregation during deposition. The injection method provides a novel approach to tailing deposition and consists of injecting tailing slurry into an existing tailing deposit. The slurry injection creates a zone of fluidization that promotes hindered settling, whereby particle segregation may be minimized. This paper presents the development of a theoretical model to describe the primary fluidization mechanisms of tailing injection and hindered settling. The model results indicate that by controlling the fluidization velocities and shape, hindered settling is promoted. This model was developed to assist with the tailing injection project at the JEB Tailings Management Facility at the McClean Lake mine site in Canada.
