From Molecules to Populations: Is There a Role for Vitamin <scp>B6</scp> in Parkinson's Disease?

Despite decades of research, the precise causes of Parkinson's disease (PD) remain elusive, and current therapies focus largely on symptomatic relief rather than disease modification.As a result, there is growing interest in the potential role of modifiable factors in PD risk, symptoms, and progression.Micronutrients are among those potentially modifiable factors, and vitamin B6 stands out because of its biological functions and emerging clinical and epidemiological observations.In this issue of Movement Disorders, Zhang et al report new epidemiological data suggesting that higher intake of B6 and folate before the diagnosis of PD may be associated with a lower risk of death among individuals subsequently diagnosed with PD. 1 This study raises important questions about the pathophysiological implications and clinical relevance of those micronutrients in PD.The findings also invite a broader look at the potential role of B6 across the disease course.
