The Production of Visibility: On the Epistemological Construction of Dust Visualization Technologies

Abstract Contemporary discourse on air quality presupposes that "seeing" equates to "knowing," treating visualization technologies as neutral instruments for revealing environmental truths. Yet visibility is not mere discovery but a product of intertwined material and discursive practices. This paper proposes "filter epistemology" to describe contemporary environmental perception: subjects infer air conditions through "what has been intercepted" rather than direct observation. This epistemology exhibits three characteristics—indirectness, posteriority, and negativity—revealing how visualization technologies "produce" the objects they claim to "represent." The analysis unfolds across three dimensions: John Tyndall's light beam experiments, the genealogy of the HEPA filter's 0.3-micron standard, and Dyson's digital interface design. The core argument holds that dust's existence is not physical disclosure but systematic technological translation—encoding invisible particles into persuasive visual indicators that shape subjects' risk perception. By anatomizing visibility's construction, this paper provides reflexive coordinates for studying sensory politics within technological governance networks.
