A Public Health Approach to Mental Health in War – Supporting Grassroots Initiatives, the Rationale, and the Role of Digital Technology

The mental health impact of war extends beyond frontline conflict zones, affecting entire communities. This paper examines how effective grassroots mental health initiatives in Ukraine demonstrate four essential hallmarks of intervention: agility, adaptability, cultural authenticity, and scalability. The highlights the role of ‘positive deviants’ – individuals and organizations making significant impacts despite resource scarcity – in identifying approaches which can be successfully scaled up. It also emphasizes the importance of digital technology in enabling and scaling these initiatives. We use case studies from Ukraine to illustrate these concepts in practice, demonstrating how innovative, community-based approaches can address the complex mental health challenges arising from conflict situations. The paper concludes that grassroots initiatives characterized by these key hallmarks and supported by digital technology, play a crucial role in innovating effective, tailored mental health interventions in war-affected populations, which can be used to inform wider public health policies.
