The Poverty in Australia 2025 Overview provides an update on the level of income poverty in Australia, based on data from the Melbourne Institute’s Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. This Report reveals the poverty gaps – the average income shortfall for people living below the poverty line – for both the 50% of median income and 60% of median income poverty lines. It also examines trends in poverty rates and in poverty gaps since 1999, and compares the poverty lines for different households with current income support payment rates.
