Determining the tribological characteristics of diamond ceramics in friction pairs with structural materials

The tribological characteristics of ultra-hard diamond-silicon carbide composite ceramic were experimentally determined using a ring-on-ring configuration against various dissimilar alloys and ceramics under dry friction conditions. The study demonstrated that the best anti-friction properties (µ = 0.05) occur in friction pairs involving diamond ceramics of analogous phase composition. The realization of interplanar contact interaction along the grain boundaries of large diamond particles, combined with the formation of a solid carbon lubricant, enables effective operational performance of the paired materials without significant mutual wear.
