Limitation of settlement of Klip River fill by surcharging

A 7m high fill was planned over the marshy Klip River for a 4 lane concrete highway. Maximum differential settlements of 3 mm per 4 m length could be tolerated. Surcharging was investigated as a solution. Notwithstanding a rather limited and unconventional investigation, good correlation with measured settlements were obtained.
