Genres of spoken interaction refer to a family of talk‐in‐interaction that involves two (dialogic) or many (multiparty) interactants in daily or institutional contexts. These genres include interaction types, such as job interviews, small talk, classroom discourse, and service encounters. This entry describes the typologies for the categorization of genres of spoken interaction. It continues with various approaches, ranging from conversation analysis (CA) to ethnomethodology, which analyze certain aspects of spoken interaction. Moreover, the entry characterizes different features of spoken interaction, of which the main ones are turn‐taking patterns, sequence organization, (im)politeness, and repair. Finally, the pedagogical implications for genres of spoken interaction in second language teaching are discussed, particularly classroom interaction, as well as directions for future research.
