Ranking and Adoption in the Licentiate Program of the Parisian Faculty of Canon Law, 1416-1448

Abstract Every second year, the Parisian faculty of canon law took part in the licentiate process of the University of Paris. After the bachelors sat for the examination, the faculty ranked them according to their academic ‘sufficiency’ and distributed individuals to members of the faculty for sponsorship, and presented both them and a sealed rotulus listing their names, ranks, and sponsors to the chancellor of Paris. Soon after this presentation, the bachelors were licensed by the chancellor in a public ceremony.
