Integrating Neurofunctional Recovery and Psychosocial Well-Being in Contemporary Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

Reconstructive plastic surgery has progressively evolved from a discipline centered on anatomical repair toward an integrated model that prioritizes functional restoration and psychosocial well-being. Contemporary reconstructive outcomes are increasingly understood as multidimensional, encompassing neurofunctional recovery, sensory and motor reintegration, psychological adjustment, body image, and quality of life. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on neurofunctional and psychosocial outcomes in modern reconstructive plastic surgery, drawing on literature from diverse reconstructive contexts and international practice, including Latin American settings. The findings indicate that sensory and motor recovery remain central neurofunctional endpoints, while quality of life, satisfaction, and body image constitute the most frequently evaluated psychosocial outcomes. Validated patient-reported outcome measures have enhanced the systematic assessment of patient-centered domains, though psychological constructs such as self-efficacy and adaptive capacity remain less consistently reported. Importantly, the reviewed evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between functional recovery and psychosocial adaptation, suggesting that reconstructive success cannot be adequately defined by technical or anatomical criteria alone. An integrated evaluation framework that aligns neurofunctional and psychosocial dimensions is essential for advancing reconstructive practice, improving educational approaches, and promoting holistic, patient-centered care.
