The Collapse of Cognitive Compensation and the Ontological Stratification of Thinking in the Digital Age

This article examines the impact of digital technologies and algorithmically governed media platforms on human cognition within the contemporary digital environment. In contrast to dominant narratives that frame technology primarily as a source of cognitive harm, the analysis conceptualizes the digital environment not as a direct destroyer of cognitive capacities but as a mechanism that amplifies and differentiates pre-existing forms of thinking across individuals. It is demonstrated that identical digital tools may foster the development of complex, integrative, and reflexive modes of thought in subjects possessing stable cognitive structures, while simultaneously accelerating the consolidation of superficial, fragmented, or reactive perception among those already predisposed to such cognitive regimes. These divergent effects become socially consequential in the context of the erosion of traditional compensatory institutions, including education systems, mass media, and cultural intermediaries, which historically functioned to smooth cognitive inequalities and sustain a shared epistemic baseline. As these institutions lose their compensatory capacity, an ontological stratification of cognitive regimes emerges, wherein differences concern not merely levels of knowledge or skill, but the very modes through which meaning, causality, and coherence are constituted. The article identifies this transformation as an epistemological shift, emphasizing that digital technologies operate as amplifying mirrors of existing cognitive structures, intensifying differences and rendering them functionally significant for contemporary forms of social organization.
