Optimizing Hydrocarbon Recovery in the Eagle Ford Shale: A Multifunctional Surfactant System for Enhanced Initial Production and Estimated Uplift Recovery with Improved Proppant Pack Conductivity

Abstract This study evaluates the performance of a novel multifunctional surfactant system applied in more than 3,000 Eagle Ford Shale wells over a three-year period, integrating a surfactant blend with a shale and scale inhibitor containing Alkyl Pyridine Quaternary Ammonium Chloride (APQ) to control pyrite oxidation, stabilize clay matrices, and minimize fines migration, with both short- and long-term production increases. A comprehensive data-driven methodology was used, combining laboratory testing and production analysis across wells in La Salle, McMullen, Karnes, and DeWitt counties, comparing treated and untreated hydraulically fractured wells through large-scale interval evaluations and well-pair analysis most commonly within 2 miles of each other using KPIs such as peak rate, 3/6/9/12/36-month cumulative production, monthly production data, Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR), Gas Oil Ratio (GOR), Water Gas Ratio (WGR), and water cut (ratio of water to total liquid phase at the wellhead, namely water plus oil). Treated wells consistently outperformed untreated wells, with wet-gas and oil/associated-gas wells both showing benefits: peak production increased by 7.8%, 1-year Barrel of Oil Equivalent (BOE) cumulative production by 14.2%, and 3-year cumulative by 36.5%, while water cuts were lower in the first 30 months and overall water production remained lower despite long-term crossover trends. WGR decreased by 14.7%, and GOR behavior varied with fluid type; well-pair comparisons in each county also showed clear advantages for treated wells. EUR improved by 52% in wells treated during the initial frac, and refracs—identified incidentally during the study—showed a 15% EUR uplift when the treatment was applied only during the refrac well on the same pad as its offset comparison. This work represents the first large-scale field validation of APQ chemistry, demonstrating significant short- and long-term production improvements in both the fracture leakoff zone and the proppant pack, with particularly strong benefits in wet-gas wells and meaningful late-life gains that enhanced refrac economics and deferred abandonment.
