Comparative Study on <i>xy</i> -Current Control Performance Within Different Reference Frames in DTP-PMSM

A dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (DTP-PMSM) is a high-performance electric motor that integrates two three-phase windings into a single PMSM stator, offering enhanced power, efficiency and fault tolerance for various electrification applications. To further improve the efficiency of DTP-PMSM, undesirable circulating currents in the stator windings should be eliminated. In the automotive industry, the suppression of circulating current improves overall system efficiency, extending battery life, and reducing heat generation, thereby enhancing reliability. To address the above issue, this paper introduces and assesses four distinct control methods: proportional integral control (PI), proportional resonance control (PR), sliding-mode control (SMC) and SMC with disturbance compensation (SMCDC). Furthermore, the comparative analysis includes implementing the foregoing controllers in three different reference rotation frames: stationary, synchronous, and anti-synchronous frames. FFT analysis and root mean square error (RMSE) are presented from simulation and experimental test results. With support of the analyzed results, it is validated that these four methods can successfully reduce circulating currents to varying degrees. Among all presented methods in this paper, PR controller implemented in the anti-synchronous frame is found to be the best <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">xy</i> current controller.
