Smart oral detox device for effective tobacco residue removal and long-term oral health

Tobacco consumption in both smoked and smokeless forms remains a major global public health challenge, with profound adverse effects on oral and systemic health. Persistent exposure to nicotine, tar, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and tobacco-specific nitrosamines leads to chronic inflammation, dysbiosis of the oral microbiome, periodontal destruction, mucosal lesions, halitosis, dental staining, and increased risk of oral potentially malignant disorders and cancers. Conventional oral hygiene practices such as tooth brushing and mouth rinses are insufficient to eliminate deeply embedded tobacco residues from gingival crevices, tongue papillae, and oral mucosa. In recent years, advances in biomedical engineering, sensor technology, and digital health have enabled the development of smart oral detox devices designed to actively remove tobacco residues while promoting long-term oral health.This article presents a comprehensive review and conceptual framework for a smart oral detox device, integrating mechanical micro-vibration, controlled irrigation, adsorptive detox matrices, antimicrobial phototherapy, and real-time biosensing. Emphasis is placed on device design, mechanism of action, clinical relevance, safety considerations, and future applications. The article synthesizes evidence from the last decade to support the potential of smart oral detoxification as an adjunctive strategy in tobacco harm reduction and oral health promotion.
