AI-Assisted English-Polish Terminology Standardization for Pediatric Joint Hypermobility: From Clinical Records to Interdisciplinary Care Pathways

This study develops an English–Polish standardization model for clinical terminology related to pediatric joint hypermobility and demonstrates how terminological stability improves interdisciplinary documentation and care coordination. Drawing on a retrospective corpus of 3,120 anonymized pediatric records (2018–2024) across medicine, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and clinical nutrition, the analysis identifies recurrent English-Polish inconsistencies and translation pitfalls that distort taxonomy logic, diagnostic precision, and register use. Key error categories include structural distortions (e.g., modifier–head reversals in hypermobility spectrum disorders), semantic drift (e.g., mobility vs. range of motion), pragmatic escalation (e.g., “difficulties” → “disorder”), and register mismatches between clinician-facing and parent-facing communication. The proposed standardization model resolves these issues through a concept-first criterion, introducing controlled equivalents—such as uogólniona nadmierna ruchomość stawów (GJH), zaburzenia ze spektrum hipermobilności (HSD), and zespół Ehlersa–Danlosa, typ hipermobilny (hEDS)—and register-sensitive phrasing for functional descriptors (męczliwość, stabilność posturalna, czucie głębokie). The model’s practical value is reinforced by a seven-category pediatric functional taxonomy that organizes documentation by functional phenotype rather than nosological label, improving referral clarity and longitudinal comparability. The study further demonstrates how standardized terminology can be operationalized digitally through termbase entries, EHR templates, and controlled-vocabulary mappings aligned with ICD-11 and SNOMED CT. Conceptually, the research situates clinical translation as a quality-of-care mechanism: terminological coherence is shown to enhance patient safety, interoperability, and trust in interdisciplinary pediatric contexts. By integrating linguistic precision, clinical pragmatics, and digital implementation, the study contributes to both medical translation scholarship and applied healthcare communication.
