Responsible Investment Considerations for Space Sustainability

Abstract Space-based information and services form part of the critical infrastructure of many countries. The societal benefits of space activities are increasingly being provided by commercial operators in the context of a rapidly expanding space economy that is fueled by private sector investment. However, commercial space actors operate in a globally shared orbital domain, which is a limited natural resource that must be used rationally, equitably, and responsibly. This requires responsible investment decisions and practices by investors. This chapter discusses the concept of space sustainability, the role of investors in creating a sustainable space economy, what constitutes responsible investment in the space domain, the benefits of responsible investment practices in space, and the risks of not pursuing responsible investment practices. The chapter closes with a discussion of the elements of responsible investment practices in space and provides guidance to investors on a responsible approach to space investing.
