This paper describes the recent advancements of the meter-long bulk high temperature superconducting undulator (BHTSU) at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We present the complete design of the BHTSU, comprised of a cryostat with three cryocoolers, a 12 T Nb3Sn solenoid and an GdBa2Cu3O7−x insert. The 200 half-moon shaped GdBa2Cu3O7−x bulks have been procured and characterized with field mapping at 77 K and 1 T. The GdBa2Cu3O7−x disks are grown with the new single-direction melt growth technique for better magnetic and structural properties and more streamlined industrial growth. We then show the development steps for the 12 T Nb3Sn solenoid used to magnetize the GdBa2Cu3O7−x bulks. Finite element method simulations were used to estimate the field uniformity and structural analysis of the solenoid. The manufacturing steps for the first coil are also shown.
