Intelligent and Immersive Games for Learning and Development in a Low-Cost Portable CAVE

In recent years, the use of games in education has attracted a lot of attention. Through game play, it can increase children’s motivation and participation, thus enhancing the efficiency of children’s learning. Multisensory activities engage multiple senses, boost memory retention, and enhance engagement in learning for children. A VR CAVE is a good way to provide an immersive environment for multisensory activities. To provide the flexibility to set up the training activities anywhere, we propose a low-cost portable CAVE with a mobile controller and implement two multisensory learning games in our CAVE to engage dyslexic children in learning Traditional Chinese characters. Our low-cost portable CAVE is easy to disassemble, transport, and reassemble. Besides, the shape of our CAVE can be adjusted based on the application requirements and available space. The two multisensory games, “Writing-in-the-air” and “Whack-a-mole”, in our CAVE demonstrate how effective it is on game-based interactive teaching methods. Based on user feedback, our immersive games in our low-cost portable CAVE can motivate dyslexic children to learn Traditional Chinese words in game play effectively.
