Optical Velocimetry: Principles & Practice – An Introduction

The work shown in this paper was originally presented on July 22, 2025 at the AIAA AVIATION Forum as part of a dedicated Special Session entitled “Meet the Turbulence Measurers”. The intent of the session was to provide a framework to facilitate technical dialogue between specialists engaged in the modelling of turbulence (“Turbulence Modellers”) and those with expertise in turbulent flow measurements (“Turbulence Measurers”) in the context of progressing the state-of-the-art regarding CFD validation. This paper represents the output of the special session but is not developed to form a definitive resource or to provide a comprehensive critique or review of the current state-of-the-art of the measurement techniques described. Rather, it is intended to provide an accessible introduction to some of the foundational concepts that could be used to stimulate the CFD validation dialogue. The activities undertaken at this Forum were conceived as the first of a series of similar events, during which the technical dialogue would be refined and extended.
