The U2/22 construction lot comprises the new construction of the ‘Rathaus’ (Town Hall) U‐Bahn Station as part of the U2 x U5 line intersection in Vienna. This is a central infrastructure project by Wiener Linien to expand and modernise the city's U‐Bahn system. The aim of the project is to expand the existing U2 station into an efficient transfer hub with the future U5 line. Particular challenges include securing the excavation pit in Vienna's heterogeneous subsoil, the proximity to existing structures and the construction work while the existing U2 line remains in operation. The construction work is being carried out with cyclical tunnelling under inner‐city conditions. A central element of the construction lot is the construction of the future station structure below the existing U2 infrastructure while it is still in service, which places the highest demands on logistics, vibration protection and deformation control. The low cover to existing foundations and pipes required tunnelling with reinforced safety measures, e.g. tube umbrellas or DS injection bodies. The U2/22 ‘Rathaus’ construction lot is a technically highly complex tunnel construction project in a sensitive inner‐city location. The mining construction of the tunnels in the immediate vicinity of historic buildings requires great care during tunnelling. The construction lot is a key point in the expansion of the Vienna U‐Bahn system and demonstrates modern tunnel construction expertise under complex inner‐city conditions.
