The Effect of Two-Parent Family Structure on the Academic Performance of Junior Secondary School Adolescents in Kakamega South Sub-County

This study investigated the effect of two-parent family structures on academic performance. Anchored on Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the study adopted a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, combining quantitative data. The target population was 4449 students, from which 357 students were selected, together with 30 teachers and 10 guidance counsellors. Data were collected using questionnaires, interview schedules, and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and ANOVA, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. Findings revealed that two-parent family structures significantly enhanced academic performance due to stability and dual support.
